A Ruthless Leader’s Rise to Power—
Until He Meets His Downfall: The Curse of Simón Bolívar.
An epic tale of power, betrayal, and runaway ambition, conflicts as old as humanity. This is a captivating short novel filled with drama, satire, and song, which reimagines Latin America’s most controversial leader in a bold fusion of fiction and reality. What if Hugo Chávez took the stage — and sang? The result is a darkly satirical, yet profoundly tragic, rise-and-fall saga.

Chávez stops at nothing to conquer power. Until he makes a fatal mistake.
The rebellion of ambitious comandante Hugo Chávez fails. As his soldiers die fighting in the streets, he hides in the basement of a military museum, where he encounters a mysterious wooden statue of Simón Bolívar. He touches it–it feels warm.
Later, when detained, Chávez seizes the spotlight, declaring to an anxious nation that his bloody coup was only the beginning.
His rapid ascent to the presidency of Venezuela is shaped by ruthless ambition, populist appeal, and key figures: Carla Garrido Bisset, a famous journalist drawn to his intensity, and Samara, a Santeria priestess with ties to the afterlife. Lurking behind the scenes is Cuban tyrant Fidel Castro, intent on seducing and exploiting the infatuated Chávez.
Yet at the height of his power, Chávez commits an unpardonable transgression: He dares defy El Libertador himself, Simón Bolívar, still defending his homeland two centuries after his death.
Hugo Chávez The Musical! is a one-of-a-kind experience—a short novel staged as a musical, with hyperlinks and QR codes to diverse music styles, and many images to bring history to life. As a hybrid of a novel and stage play, this book combines narrative storytelling and dialogue-driven scenes.
The author captures the drama of musicals like Les Misérables and Evita in a bold new hybrid format, perfect for eBook or print.
Alvaro Gutierrez moved to New York City with his family at age nine, attended boarding schools, and later studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton. He spent over two decades in his native Venezuela before returning to the United States in 2002, where he now resides.
Having lived extensively in both countries, Alvaro’s perspective is especially relevant as the influence of Latino culture continues to grow in all areas of American society. When asked, “What language do you dream in?” he found it an intriguing question, given his early immersion in English and his later life in Venezuela.
“It depends on the setting and who I’m talking to,” he replied. That, he believes, is the true mark of a bilingual mind—when the language of choice emerges unconsciously in that intimate, uncensored world we call dreams.
Early in 1998, Alvaro met and had a drink with Hugo Chávez, then a relatively unknown presidential candidate. Was he worth supporting? Certainly, his fiery attacks on corruption, squandered oil wealth, crime, and poverty resonated with most Venezuelans—including Alvaro.
That curious encounter inspired this musical, written so many years later. It is a dramatic tale of ambition, betrayal, and damnation—universal themes that transcend time and place.
